Tenerife's most impressive route
The Masca ravine is possibly Tenerife's best-known and most spectacular hiking route. The trail descends from the picturesque village of Masca (600 m altitude) to the beach of the same name, passing through a volcanic gorge with walls up to 500 metres high.
The route is 5 kilometres long and downhill only, which makes it technically accessible for hikers with a basic-to-intermediate level. However, the path is uneven, with stretches of earth, rock and some sections requiring hand support. Proper hiking footwear and a basic level of fitness are needed.
On arrival at Masca beach, a boat picks up hikers for the return by sea to Los Gigantes, offering a unique perspective of the cliffs you've just descended. This boat ride is one of the most memorable moments of the route.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the Masca hike cost?
Walking down the gorge with the coach out, the boat back to Los Gigantes and the transfer to your accommodation is €49 per adult and €24.50 per child aged 8 to 11. It runs on Tuesdays and Fridays, leaving the south at 08:20. If you would rather see the village without the hike, the 2-hour visit is €28 per adult and €18 per child aged 2 to 11, and it runs daily. Where is the meeting point and at what time?
The meeting point is agreed according to the route, with the option of pickup in the south of Tenerife. Departure is early in the morning, which is when the gorge is at its best: less heat and fewer people. The exact details reach you by WhatsApp on confirmation.
How long is it in total and how do we get back?
Between 4 and 6 hours in total. The descent of the gorge is 3-4 hours of walking and, once at the beach, the return is by boat to Los Gigantes depending on the option booked. Without the boat, the only alternative is to climb the five kilometres back up.
Is it a difficult hike?
The hike is of medium difficulty. The path is downhill only (no climbing), which reduces the effort. However, the terrain is uneven with sections of loose stone and passages between rocks. You need hiking or trekking boots (ordinary trainers will not do) and a basic level of fitness.
Can I do the gorge without a guide?
Technically yes, but you need a special permit from the Tenerife Cabildo to enter the gorge. We handle all the permits. Besides, the guide is essential on some sections of the route. With a guide the experience is much safer and richer.
How much water should I bring?
At least 2 litres of water per person. The hike can take 3 to 4 hours of walking in the heat. We also recommend a hat, sunscreen, a snack and quick-drying clothes (in case of water or mud crossings). At the end of the gorge you can swim at the beach.
Can children do it?
For the gorge descent the minimum age is 8, and the child rate (€24.50) runs up to age 11. Above that they pay as adults. It is not terrain for small children: it is several hours of descent over loose rock. If you are travelling with younger ones, the 2-hour village visit is suitable from age 2, at €18.
What does the price include?
The certified mountain guide, activity insurance and the safety briefing; some operators add water and a snack. It does not include transport unless in a package, hiking gear or meals. We detail exactly what your option does and does not include before confirming.
Which language does the guide speak?
Spanish, English or French depending on the departure. Tell us which one you need when booking and we confirm the guide available for that day.
What if it rains or the sea stops the boat?
With rain or risk of rockfall the gorge is closed, and if the sea does not allow the boat there is no descent: in both cases the date is changed or an equivalent route is proposed, such as Anaga. For any other reason, free cancellation up to 48 hours before.
