What you visit

The morning starts in the municipality of Arona, at a local farmers' market: the stalls belong to the growers, and what's on offer depends on the season, with tropical fruit, vegetables, local cheese and honey. The guide explains what each product is and how it's used in Canarian cooking, so it's a good moment to taste and buy. The bus then continues to a farm that grows prickly pears, the fruit of the Opuntia cactus, where you see how it's cultivated, what it has been used for on the islands and which products are made from it today. The visit ends with a tasting of those products and the bus takes you back to your accommodation.

Why the prickly pear

Anyone driving around the south of Tenerife sees prickly pear cacti everywhere, along roadsides, terraces and dry slopes, and hardly anyone knows what to do with them. It's a plant that copes with the dry southern climate and has been part of the islands' farming landscape for generations. At the farm you learn how it's grown, how the fruit is picked without getting pricked and what is made from it. It's a different stop from the usual bananas or wine visit, which is why it pairs well with our other agritourism mornings: if you've already done the bananas and winery one, this shows another side of Canarian farming.
