What you visit

The morning starts at a banana plantation, walking through the crop with the people who work it. They explain why the Canarian banana is nothing like the fruit sold as a banana on the mainland: here it is left to ripen on the plant, takes far longer and that is why it tastes different. The visit ends with a tasting of local products.

The second stop is the Centinela viewpoint, in San Miguel de Abona, with the whole volcanic south at your feet: the cinder cones, the terraces and, beyond them, the sea. It is the photo of the morning and the spot where you suddenly understand how this part of the island is put together.

It ends at a local winery with a tasting of five wines accompanied by regional produce. Southern Tenerife grows vines at altitudes where almost nobody would expect them, on volcanic soil and with very little rain, and that yields wines unlike anything on the mainland. By 1pm you are back.

Frequently asked questions

How many wines do you taste?

Five, served with local produce, at a winery in the area. It is the last stop of the morning, right before heading back to your accommodation.

Can children come?

Yes. Up to age 11 they pay €58, and they usually enjoy the banana plantation. The wine tasting, of course, is adults only.

Can you buy wine there?

Yes, the winery sells what it makes, and these are wines you will barely find outside the islands. Purchases are not included in the price.

How much walking is there?

Very little, and on the flat: this is a coach excursion with three stops, not a hike. It suits anyone who can walk on unpaved ground without difficulty.
